I was doing my Legion duty on Friday and manning (personing?) a poppy station at our local grocery store. For you Yanks that at may not be as familiar with wearing poppies on Remembrance Day - or Remembrance Day for that matter, Remembrance Day is our equivalent to Veterans Day when we remember the sacrifice of all those who served Canada in war. The poppy is the symbol of the sacrifice and is based on the poem In Flanders Fields by Colonel John McCrae. Poppies are offered to the public to wear as a remembrance and donations are accepted which go to support veterans. I was asked a number of times how much the poppies cost to which I responded that there was no price and people could donate whatever they thought was appropriate. It turns out that I will be fulfilling the usual duties (or most of them) on November 11 as my resignation as Legion chaplain was not accepted. I thought it appropriate to resign/retire from that position along with my retirement as parish priest. I am looking forward to the services on Remembrance Day and appreciate the opportunity to still be involved officially. Writing this I am reminded that it is appropriate that there is no price for the poppies as they represent the priceless sacrifice our veterans. I hope everyone will be able to attend services on Remembrance Day or if not observe the two minutes of silence at 11:00 a.m.
