I was fortunate as a child to live on the Magothy. I have so many memories of childhood adventure outdoors -- dipping soft crabs in the grass beds, having jellyfish fights with cousins and neighbors, watching my dad and uncles build a pier from scratch without heavy equipment, ducks, gulls, herons, osprey and ice. My job every day when the river would freeze would be chopping up the ice around the pier pilings to keep them from being moved with the rising and falling tides. And there was one not so fond memory of falling through the ice and darn near ending this story right there. But alas my sister came to my rescue and we have that story to tell. There was another outdoorsy side to my childhood and that involved the farm. Yes, the same farm we now call Dun-Pikin. My grandfather had a truck farm and I enjoyed many a day roaming the fields and woods and as I grew older answering my grandfathers call to come over, I wanna show you something which really meant he had something he needed help with or wanted you to do. I learned to use the tractor, an old Ford 8N. That tractor replaced the two mules he worked the farm with eventually and I do have memories of him using them for plowing, and harrowing and cultivating the corn, tomatoes, melons, beans and other crops he grew. That was a long time ago though and I was too young to assist. Looking back now I wish I could have had that chance. The old stable where the mules were kept is gone now. It stood right in front of the little pony stable at the top of the driveway. I still see it there sometimes when I muck the pony stalls. A ghost of a memory... Were still making memories at Dun-Pikin. I hope you enjoyed this little walk down memory lane. Come and make a memory or two or three....Come Ride With Us!
