I was going to stay quiet on FB on the Cosby issue. But I think people are somewhat confused and I think a lot of this is confusion about who we think Bill Cosby is. Bill Cosby is a celebrity actor. Before the Bill Cosby Show he was on I SPY. It was a salt and pepper comedy adventure that ran 1965-1968 starring Bill and Robert Culp. The Cosby Show is on the air roughly 20 years later 1984 - 1992. Some of you younger folks grew up with this very quintessential image of Bill Cosby as Dr. Huxtable, a very carefully constructed positive character who countered the usual, run-of-the-mill vagabond Black men on tv. This was an big improvement for prime time tv. Whats my point? Separate the actor/the image/the character from the man. We dont know Bill Cosby. Even some folks who are his personal friends, may not really know him. Some of you who find it difficult to believe the allegations are thinking about Dr. Huxtable, not Bill Cosby, the actor who portrayed him. Im not actually taking sides on this, but I dont tend to believe in the great conspiracy to assassinate the character of Bill Cosby. I felt differently about the real character assassinations of public figures like MLK and Malcolm X and other Civil Rights figures by the FBI and others. Bill Cosby is the actor who portrayed a beloved tv character, Dr. Huxtable. I dont think I have to burnish or protect the image of a celebrity actor. Maybe he is just a nasty old man who cant keep his pants zipped. Not the first - not the last.
