I was going to write this comment yesterday but I dont want to look like Im picking on any particular person. Does anybody really need an Apple Watch? Of course not, but Apple is the first technology company to really embrace its role as a fashion company, and this watch is almost pure fashion. When I look at the way that watch interface moves the screen up and down, when I see the intricate design of an iPhone 6, when I see how the curve of metal meets the screen, I finally get why a woman would spend hundreds of dollars on the perfect pair of shoes. Its a fashion thing, and thats ok. Fashion is in the details, not just about what a product does, but how it looks, how it feels and how it makes you feel. Its customary for men to turn their noses up at fashion, but why would anybody really need a Ford Mustang? My Taurus gets me around just as well. Why waste all that money? Because its about fashion. The look, the feel, going beyond the basic functionality to enjoying the power when something exceeds that minimum. That little thrill you get when a process is just a few seconds faster on your new toy. Its luxury, its waste, its aesthetics, but thats ok. Its become fashionable to turn your nose up at luxury these days. Im not like the rest of you materialists, I can get by just fine with my Nokia, thank you very much! But rejecting fashion is a kind of fashion, too. And if I just like the way a cool watch makes me feel, if I enjoy that little thrill I get from watching a product exceed the minimum a dozen times per day, is that so wrong? (I really miss having a newspaper column, can you tell?)
