I was handing out how to vote papers on Saturday morning at the Voting Booth at Turramurra Recreation Centre. At each state and federal election we have the same problem. The entrance to the Polling booth is next to the main entrance to the courts inside. It was chaos about 9am because of Saturday morning kids basketball (around 100 people involved) and the three electorates serviced at the booth (over 3000 voters). There was no sign to the narrow entrance. Many times we had to rescue voters headed into the basketball court carrying their how to vote material. A lady from the Voting Booth in a yellow official shirt stood on one side of the path leading to the booth, while two of us stood on the other side to shepherd them in. Thanks to our efforts it worked pretty well but should not have been necessary. While the Electoral Commission should provide a prominent “Polling Booth” sign, I believe the Council who owns the centre should improve the entry to the voting booth to make the entry less confusing and early morning wait more pleasant, particularly in the event of wet weather. At present there is a cigarette disposal at chest level attached to the corner wall next to the entry and a red fire hydrant on the path, and pine bark scattered along the narrow path, pretty uninviting! This needs to be improved.
