I was honored to be at Space Center Houston this morning as they lifted and mounted the Space Shuttle Independence replica onto one of the 747 shuttle carrier aircrafts in classic ‘piggyback’ configuration - it was an inspiring sight to witness. During the event, I had the privilege to meet a few of the heroes of this iconic program, astronauts who flew on the Shuttle and the dedicated employees who worked behind the scenes to make it happen. This attraction will undoubtedly serve as a visible tribute to the tremendous accomplishments of the shuttle program team and a reminder of the great potential and achievements yet to be realized in Americas space program. For decades, the research and technological developments have provided significant contributions to our economy and national defense - and MUST continue. The Johnson Space Center has long played a leadership role in human spaceflight programs and we must collectively focus on maintaining this position, while developing a strategy moving forward. When elected to represent this district, I will work hard to see that JSC returns to being the robust space exploration and operations center it once was. NASA and the human spaceflight program are, and should always be, one of the greatest and fitting symbols of American ingenuity and achievement.
