I was honoured to have been able to see my longtime friend, Elisapee Sheutiapik receive the 2014 Voice of Hope Award last night. I am so proud of her accomplishments and the work she has done with the Angel Street Project. When Elisapee created the Angel Street Project I was Nunavut’s Health Minister and the Minister for Status of Women. I knew right away that she had created a campaign with the power to bring about fundamental change and that her efforts deserved the full support of the territory’s government. Thanks to the project’s growing success, cities in at least seven different provinces and territories have created their own Angel Streets to take a public stand against domestic violence and draw ongoing attention to this important issue.
