I was immediately struck by Orkneys opulence and its openness. The hedgeless roads ran over a low heather-covered moorland, with patches of gorse and grey and white farms dotted about everywhere, and all the low-lying land under cultivation. It was obvious at a glance that I was on an island where people not only work hard but with extreme skill. England, I felt, must have looked like this in days gone by. Every living thing looked well cared for, specially the black cattle and the richly fleecy sheep; while the poultry were almost Brobdingnagian.
