I was in Publix supermarket recently and there was this elderly lady just having a succession of farts unperturbed. I think she was unaware. No one really reacted overtly as such, they just looked at their companion, giggled and walked by. I started to think about the peculiarities of human social habits. This is a normal bodily function that should be undertaken in private if possible but why the shame if it escapes and why the universal response of laughter when we witness its escape. I must confess I too has a tiny laugh then wondered why I found it amusing.
