I was in a taxi And... (Episode 1) Lutendos story. I was in a taxi And.... the minute I stepped in my hunch lit up, I knew something was going to happen. And I didnt lie. Peeew! It was a chilled Saturday afternoon, the taxi was a typical white Toyota Quantum. However, the driver was far from typical,He had on a nice pair of formal shoes,an immaculate white collar shirt, and yes how could one overlook his silk red tie.His whole aura resembled a limousine chauffeur at first glimpse. Anyway, I got in and made my way to the far right end of the back-sit .For some weird reason I always choose that sit Whenever possible, it gives one a better view of everything going on inside the cab. Normally you wait for no more than 15 minutes until the taxi fills up with people,on this occasion it took slightly longer but, Heaven Forbid, it was worth it. Nevertheless, an animated cast of characters came to the party. More on that later. The Petty cash was split up,shared, counted out then and passed forward and yes the driver was happy and escorted us past the hustle and bustle of the city down the highway. The taxi swerved with the confidence of a Quantum down the avenue(s).Soft music playing on the backround, it was the ideal setting of ones moneys worth. That is until one heavy skinny owk who was, apparently, sitting next to his girl carelessly enquired Driver, ngicela ukhuphuli volume da, icherry yami iyayi Thanda lengoma(Translation: Can you please increase the Volume a bit, my girlfriend loves this Song). The Driver responded in Venda Volumu o khou engedza Hayani ha Makhulu wa we (Youll increase the volume at your grannys house not in my taxi) YOH!. Silence screamed all round the atmosphere, you could literally cut the tension in the air with a knife.... And then............. Wait I did mention earlier that Ill tell you more about the characters right? Right. So, Of course the driver was happy, not because of the red silk tie he wore or the expensive Italian shoes that he bought at Sandton Square the previous week, but what put him in a state of bliss was that next to him sat a beautiful, big eyed, natural Tswana cultured girl. Her skin colour was Hennessy bronze, she was humble. The driver hesitantly looked to his left, took a deep breath & gathered the courage to ask her Kha va mpfarele sweetheart ,vho vuwa hani?(Excuse me,How are you?). She responded with a discreet giggle . Hehe,Ke teng,my name is Dimpho...but my friends call me Dimples she chuckled at him invitingly. He noticed that her attention was focused down his legs and he curiously asked her zwino? Did you drop something? She replied no, thing is, Ive never seen such a long shaft in my life...and he replied with a naughty smile Ow,hehe actually, its one of a kind, I installed this truck gear lever in my taxi...thats why they call me Thembanator at the rank.. . He grinned. The evening was drawing near and the ambient grey clouds would soon Blanket the sky .It was forming up to rain. Its really big Hey! Anyway, waitse Ive never met a taxi driver with such poise and calm! dimples lightly exclaimed , hardly looking at the driver. He smiled with a flirtatious expression crafted on his face. Lutendo(The driver) was the conservative kind . Abused and left for scraps from his early childhood by his foster family he was the type who hardly ever smiled, let alone laugh but Dimphos presence seemed to elicite the sweet child buried inside his Heart. Meanwhile, two rows in front of my near view I could hear subtle sounds amidst the taxi, it was the skinny fellow arguing in whispers with his girlfriend Sgubudo, ngcela ubuyisele umese eskhwameni, ngiyakucela baba wezingane zami, you just got out of jail, I dont wanna lose you again, No. (Please put the knife back in your pocket ,I beg of you father of my kids) Sgubudo, an old wounded alpha male stripped of his throne retorted Yaz wena ungijwayeza ngabantu kabi, umzwile athini lo muntu kimi, kuwe, kithi sobabili?(Dont piss me off ,did you hear what he said to me, to you, to both of us as a unit) . His anger evaporated so much so that the windows were beginning to mistify. To my surprise it had already began raining. The girl sitting next to Dimpho was a coloured excuse for a woman, she had one tattoo on her lower back written No Regrats, an appalling spelling error. The lines on her face told a story of one who has no regard for a sober life, she was tired and her soul downcast.More on her later. Short left The fat lady with plastic handbags, and a baby on her back kindly murmured. Cranking his Shaft Lutendo dropped her off and drove on. Still chatting up Dimpho.A Blind pursuit. Sgubudo, saw the vacant seat in front of him and slowly approached like a snake on a prowl, peering near Lutendo . Xola, his girlfriend hung tight to his arm like it was about to give out heavenly manna. I looked on...... . Hao fetsa go jika driver the braided School girl hollored. It was pouring cats and dogs by now Sgubudos witnesess were slowly decreasing. Stay tuned for the next episode.
