I was in elementary school when the towers fell. Students were disappearing from class as parent after parent came in to collect them, and soon mine came for me, too. I remember my dad coming to get me, and opening the door of the house to see, on the television, the smoke, rising from the ashes in a cloud, oddly gentle compared to the chaos around it. At the time, I was confused. Why were people crying? I distinctively remember comparing it to each time I had built a tower out of blocks and knocked those down for fun. Many years have passed since then. I am older, wiser, and stronger, but when I try to fathom this act in history, as well as many other acts of the same ferocity, I feel the same as I did so many years ago, unable to comprehend, and truthfully, a little frightened. Mr. Rogers once said, When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping. To this day, especially in times of disaster, I remember my mothers words and I am always comforted by realizing that there are still so many helpers – so many caring people in this world. Let us remember the brave brave soldiers who have fought for this country, the firefighter who have died in their acts of duty, and let us remember the people around us now, the ones we love and the strangers we dont know, that we may love and work together to create a caring environment in both times of love as well as fear.
