I was in the city when this happened. I was shocked at what I witnessed. Citizens requiring special permission to enter and leave their own homes. Neighbourhoods blocked by fences. People being dragged into the street and arrested in their pyjamas and underwear early in the morning because they were involved in a free public information meeting at a local library and therefore suspected of potentially being anarchists (Seriously. This was miles away from the actual demonstrations and the summit itself. But because these people had the nerve to merely criticize the G20, they were dragged down the pavement in various states of undress, tossed in a paddywagon and taken away.) Hundreds of commuters just waiting for the streetcar were detained in a rainstorm for hours on a street corner for no reason whatsoever. Police went into dormitories at the university and arrested people for -owning black clothing- because that also made them suspected of potentially being anarchists (remember this if you ever have to attend a funeral in Toronto. Wear plaid, be safe.) The air itself hurt your throat and burned your eyes, so much pepper spray was unloaded around town. And our very own taxes paid for this. Yup. We got to foot the bill for heaps of gross violations of constitutional rights. (Clearly they arent really our rights; helpful suggestions the government is free to ignore whenever it wishes perhaps is a more fitting description?)
