I was introduced to Tom Verlaine through an opening set with The Church on their Starfish tour in 1988. I didnt really understand what he was doing at the time, but someone mentioned the influence of Television on the band. I filed that fact for later. Not long before, I had seen REM cover See No Evil on their Document tour. When I finally listened to Marquee Moon, I wanted to go back in time to watch that opening set again. This is the pinnacle of two-guitar rock for me, and its impact on other big favorites like Midnight Oil and The Church is evident. Verlaines voice is admittedly acquired taste, but if you can enjoy Talking Heads, this wont present any problems. Verlaines outsider voice is perfect for the character of these songs, regardless. The interplay with guitarist Richard Lloyd is fascinating. Some compare Verlaines solo style to Richard Thompsons. This link is expanded well beyond the actual 46 minutes of the original album, which is too bad. I recommend playing through Torn Curtain and turning it off.
