I was just a small Thundercat when I had my first encounter with boxing. I remember I used to sit down next to my father and share awesome afternoons of boxing matches on the television. In my household, my family were all big fans of Muhammad Ali, Larry Holmes and Sugar Ray Leonard. Whenever Sugar Ray fought, it didnt seem like a regularly scheduled fight, it was more like a global event in my house. As much as I loved the sport, I never took it serious enough to actually compete. The closest thing I got to that was a few scrapes at the playgrounds and private school. Besides, all the cool kids in the neighborhood either played basketball or rode freestyle BMX bikes; so evidently, I took the safer route with basketball. I still live and breathe the game of hoops, but not until recently... a little over a year ago, my passion for boxing began to resurface. Dont get me wrong, Ive never stop enjoying the world of boxing... guys like Floyd Mayweather, Sugar Ray Leonard, Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield, Pernell Whitaker, Tommy The Hitman Hearns and Roy Jones Jr. were my favorite boxers... especially Roy aka Captain Hook. Seeing those guys performed was like watching art taking form on a blank canvas. As far as myself, practicing this sport gives me a strong sense of freedom and a constant renewal of confidence that I can handle anything that life throws at me. Boxing is a sport... and yes, a most dangerous sport thats famous for giving the underdog a window of opportunity. Boxing can also put you in the dirt... literally. Thats why I have so much respect for these fighters who put their bodies at risk. Not only can boxing allow an individual to gain lucrative circumstances (if one puts in the time, sacrifice and hard work), but will also allow them to subvert an undesired reality and become something better. Im convinced its that confidence and freedom which enables a person to renew their personal meaning and their everyday experience in life. I hope you enjoyed the read and my VERY amateur video watching The Handz of Zeus fly... ha! I still gotta lot of work to do Happy Monday... ~ R
