I was just chatting with someone about Sailor Moon Crystal (that reboot of Sailor Moon thats actually faithful to the manga and uses the mangas art style as closely as humanly possible so why dont you stop reading this and go watch Sailor Moon Crystal), and this fan was complaining about Usagis new voice actress in the Japanese dub. Basically, heres what went down: Fan: Ugh, I hate the new voice actress for Usagi! The original Japanese actress was so much better, and this ones voice is too high, and shes trying to imitate Kotono Mitsuishi, and Mitsuishi was so perfect in the original! Me: Um...You DO realize that Kotono Mitsuishi was Sailor Moon in Sailor Moon Crystal as well as the original anime. Youre basically sitting here telling me that the same voice actress is imitating herself and is wrong for the part, while at the same time telling me that shes perfect as Usagi just because it was the 90s anime. Fan: Oh. Well, I hated how skinny all of the girls looked in this reboot compared to the original; they all have long legs and too thin arms! Me: Thats because they were staying true to the original mangas art style, which featured women with long legs and arms, as well as very slender figures. So do you want to complain about how uninformed you are about this series and its voice actors, or do you want to complain about how your nostalgia goggles are so tight that you cant see how a good and faithful adaptation of a manga is supposed to occur? Look, Im fine with complaining about things due to your own biased nostalgia (As one of the most biased, nostalgic, and elitist jerks in any fandom, I do it all the time). I just wish people would learn about the subject matter and reasons for SMCs adaptation before they embarrass themselves.
