I was just looking on pinterest and thought I should make an early morning cake public service announcement. Doing the burlap thing for your wedding theme? Super cute, right? Yep! Love it! Will I put it on a CAKE????? NOOOOOOOOO!!!! Why not? Because burlap is a loose weave fabric that is by nature very rustic both in look and feel. It has little hairs that come off or can shed on icing. There are a couple of ways to slightly protect your cake icing by backing the fabric, but both are still pretty high risk. A better option is to do a fondant burlap-look banding. Its not quite the same because there will be no loose-weave, it will be solid. However, it will have texture and will be the correct color. And most importantly it will not shed!!! Share with all your wedding friends who are going the burlap route- say NO to hairs in cake!
