I was just outside in my backyard, looking at birds and squirrels, - TopicsExpress

I was just outside in my backyard, looking at birds and squirrels, knowing that all their activities make sounds, but unable to hear them because of the background noise generated by the city. Then this thought came to my mind. As the intensity, volume, duration of manmade noise has been progressing in our environment throughout the centuries, music has been changing as well. If we are constantly exposed to noise beyond a certain threshold, what happens to our capacity to listen to whats below that threshold? Does it still make sense or does it still come natural to create music with a large dynamic range? If the monotone effect of noise guides our ears into accepting a narrower and constant frequency range, what happens to our capacity to listen to complex harmonic structures? What happens to our capacity to even focus on the different parts of the frequency range. When noise is constantly in our ears, what happens to our ability to enjoy or even imagine the utility of pauses? Does this affect how music is created, performed or consumed? Do you feel theres actually a connection between noise and music? Feel free to add your thoughts here.. : )
