I was just reading a story about former Arizona Governor Raul Hector Castro - hes 96 years old. He was stopped in a border check. Ever the consummate diplomat (He was ambassador at one time or another I believe to El Salvador, Brazil, Argentina and Bolivia) he tried to smooth over the repercussions though the University professor driving him was angry with the way he was treated. I once heard from him that he was there for a speech circa 1928 of Arizonas first elected governor - Governor Hunt - who was making a speech in some little town near Douglas Arizona about how Arizona was a land of opportunity. Governor Hunt pointed a finger at Castro who was sitting in the shade under the bleachers (about 12 years old) and said Why this boy here may one day be governor himself Castro applied himself and graduated from NAU and went on to Uof A law school. And eventually ran for and became governor. He was not the first hispanic governor in the US. Romualdo Pacheco of California probably holds that honor. And a significant number of New Mexicos governors have been hispanic. But his election was an affirmation of his determination and dedication, Governor Hunts ideal of opportunity and Arizonas diverse heritage. He resigned to take up another ambassadorial post. Arizona since then has an impressive record for having women serve as governor with four in all and three serving consecutively, and both numbers are records in the US (all of this without being a Blue state).
