I was just saying to people this morning that I had not eaten anything lately, that was really worth talking about. How quickly things change. By 10 oclock I had been for breakfast and had a top class meal and top class service. Where you say? At one of my new all-time favourites, Dean Clarkes Mayfair Cafe in Mackeurtan Avenue (outside Woolworths). There is just such a great vibe. People all seem to know each other and there is just something magic about this little venue. Every one of the staff are friendly, efficient and knowledgable. Even the chef comes out for a chat and to talk about the food, which shows a passion for the business. I had a business meeting and must have greeted five people that I knew during the time I was there. My partner ordered the breakfast special which was corn fritters, avocado, bacon, feta cheese and poached eggs with dabs of sweet chilli on the side. The verdict was that everything was done perfectly. I had the my normal breakfast tester, an English breakfast, which again was done to perfection. As I have said before, an English breakfast is very straightforward but it is surprising how many venues mess it up. That is why it is such a good tester. Mayfair passed with flying colours. Mayfair dont usually do Eggs Benedict, but they will be doing them tomorrow morning (Saturday). If they are anything like the rest of their food people will be camping in the car park early tomorrow morning to get a table. I predict a bright future for Mayfair Cafe, especially when they move to their larger premises in the Woolworths building where the ex Oscars Durban North used to be. While chatting to the owner, Dean, I was just saying that the restaurant business is very much a hands-on business and cannot be done by remote control. He agreed 100% because he knows that, and anybody visiting this venue cant help but notice the result.
