I was just thinking.... and we all know what happens when Hedwig has a thought.... This one is faaar less likely to be anywhere near canon but I really thought this one out. What if Peter actually didnt betray the Potters by choice? What if Voldemort actually did torture Peter? So now I have this picture in my head of Wormtail going missing about the week or so before Halloween. And hes tortured and put through the worst pains until his is literally at deaths door. He didnt even realize he gave in until he regained consciousness hours later, and when he did guilt plagued him. He went straight to Gordrics Hollow, barely able to stand but still hoping he could stop it, that there was still time.... Instead he finds a destroyed house. He doesnt go inside, he knows what hell find in there. Instead he wanders the streets, feeling lost and alone and so so guilty. Thats when Sirius finds him. He wants desperately for it to be like the old days, when Sirius would help get him out of trouble and the two of them would go off to find their friends and plot out their next adventure. Instead, Sirius is demanding an answer, to know why he betrayed James. Peter cant bring himself to speak, he knows what hes done and he cant justify it by any means. And what Sirius is saying is just making him feel worse and worse... And then he remembers the night the Fidelius Charm was performed. It was supposed to be Sirius. Sirius would have been able to stand up to the Dark Lord. He would have died before giving in... But no, Sirius convinced James and Lily to change the plan. To have HIM be the Secret Keeper. In a fit of momentary insanity, he yells that it was Sirius who betrayed the Potters. In his mind, he was right, if Sirius hadnt changed the plans they might still be alive... He spent twelve years living as a pet rat because even that was more than he deserved. What right did he even have to live after what happened that night? And when Sirius escaped Azkaban he starts to relive his old memories. The physical torture the Dark Lord put him through, the crushing guilt of James and Lilys death, and now the added shame of landing one of his best friends in Azkaban for over a decade. When he escaped during the Full Moon after the Shrieking Shack, he hadnt meant to find Voldemort. It was a chance meeting, a very slight chance. Wormtail spent the next year and a half under the Imperius Curse, all the while Voldemort was slowly poisoning his mind. And once Voldemort was resurrected, it was no longer about doing what was right. It was about survival, because now that the silver hand was a part of him, if he dared even a thought against the Dark Lord he knew he would be dead. ~Hedwig
