I was just told, very politely, that having equal rights as a gay person doesnt really bother her...however, she just doesnt like that it is being rammed down my throat by the federal government. However, apperently, if it were the state government, she would be fine with the ramming, but just a little less hostile. SMH Since I was on a loved ones thread, I decided to be as kind as I could with this response: Youre right. We could debate all day long and never agree...civilly. What it boils down to is what side of history will we be on. Will we repeat the days of the Articles of Confederation? A disastrous attempt to make the states as autonomous as possible? Or continue to move forward, not fearing the government that makes possible the thousands of amenities we often blindly enjoy each day, like roads, schools, policeman and 10 million insured children. Or on the side where gay peoples rights had to be decided by the states, whose process, BTW, can be casually referred to as being rammed down my throat without the slightest use of human empathy to infer that that may be insulting to some. In particular gay people like me and my cousin Cristy, not to mention all the friends and family that you so graciously pointed out before. Im sure you meant no harm, you probably didnt even think about it. But if I said something like that about, oh lets say the Jewish community....if I said, I dont mind Jews having equal rights, I just dont want it rammed down my throat. ...I would probably be seen as anti-Semitic. When in those terms....do you think you might want to re-word your complaints about my rights being recognized on a Federal level? No response yet. Will keep you all posted. @@
