I was leading a seminar at a reputed engineering college in Kerala a few days back. One of the disturbing things I watched during the day is the plight of post-graduate students and their hopelessness. Many students who have joined for M.Tech are clueless regarding the reason why they are there, and where they end up after the course. To my surprise most of them are girls and according to them, they have joined the course only to avoid an unemployed status. By joining a post-graduate program they have conveniently avoided the reality of facing the challenges of the job market at least for the time being. Any course of study is a comfort zone for many. But they are not understanding that they have to face the reality of placement even after post-graduation and that too against a higher expectation! Dear students/parents, before joining a course plan career well. A post-graduation is good for high-end jobs, research and teaching positions. Check whether the candidate has the skill-sets and learning ability to match such fields.Otherwise a post-graduate course make you more disabled in the job market. Sometimes a graduate is not getting a placement due to lack of soft-skills or domain knowledge. In that case a Finishing School is a better option. In fact, a post-graduation may not help solve the situation. A sincere analysis and proper guidance would definitely help. No course will give you any additional scope, but you can get ahead of even higher-qualified candidates with right skills and attitude. Do not fall into degree trap, raise your quality instead!
