I was listening on NPR to the gay black man whose "performance" - TopicsExpress

I was listening on NPR to the gay black man whose "performance" in an early documentary was pretty revolutionary--he just talked about his life and shocked a huge percentage of his audience--this was, I think, back in the 70s. It occurred to me how little curiosity most people have about lives not like their own. Middle class people are notorious for their fear of those below them on the social scale. I would imagine that more human misery is caused by lack of imagination than by simple malice. Think how needlessly children suffer because of the dull lack of empathy in their parents; what we do not understand, we cannot sympathize with. We dismiss it as unimportant and unacceptable. I guess the best people, and the best parents are those with an uncensored curiosity.
