I was listening to the song Aila Aila from I, i could immediately reminisce about two spellbinding compositions of Rahman. Strawberry Kanne and Chandralekha from Thiruda Thiruda. Im going to write about Chandralekha (may be for the operatic flavour, i instantly reminisced) it is still a magnificent composition, i mean the entire album is a magnum opus. it ignited an unquenchable musical quest in me, I presume i would be studying sixth or seventh grade when i had listened to it for the first time (though it was released little earlier). Keith Peterss short bass solo on the song Thee Thee is the reason why im playing the guitar now due to Butterfly effect. It made such a profound impact on me at the very young age. I will write a complete review (though it was written well by many others) shortly. Because it is such a magnificent piece of music. If I were to recommend a song to my son in his teens in the distant future, I would ask him to take a listen to Chandralekha, it’s still fresh and unique as it was little over decades ago. Time does not diminish the quality of that magic not even an iota. Its originality and charisma still set it apart. My father recommended me the song “Enna Enna Vaarthaigalo” (Vennira Aadai) from another gigantic director and music director when I was a school boy (Sridhar and MSV). It still continues to baffle me after all these years. So compositions like these have their own timelessness. Maniratnam, Rahman and PC Sreeram had their pinnacle of their career. Just one song, none after this. They are yet to produce another song to re-create this magic. I often wonder how Rahman could spot his singers. I strongly believe Anupama does not have to sing another song to prove her brilliance and versatility, just one song for her entire lifetime. PC, some sequence of light effects and a bunch of crackers, period. A truly original and fascinating work. Maniratnam, this creative process is still a master piece which still baffles others. All directors including Shankar fail miserably to create this kind of magic with the advancement of all sophisticated technologies. I heard Amit Trivedi extole the magic of this album. If this soundtrack is still a magic for these talented composers, Im just a nobody trying to write something new. If I were to rate Rahman’s top 3 soundtracks, they would be Thiruda Thiruda, Swades, Kannathil Muththamittaal. https://youtube/watch?v=Uj_18hXo5G0
