I was listening today how they said, kids should drink water especially when they sweat. However, there are some who dont sweat and especially when you are already dehydrated and maybe the only sign is that you are dehydrated. Make sure that you teach your child to look at their urine. I they are old enough to play a sport they are old enough to understand color. So make sure they check to see the different colors for clues: burnt orange, they need more water and nutrients whereas clear they need more nutrients and less water but add a little electrolytes to their diet. Pediasure, pickles, Gatorade, pineapple juice. Keep a protein shake like Shaklee meal shake plan that is safe for kids to give them before the sport. It has a balanced amount of protein, sugars and nutrients. Another good one is oatmeal with almond or peanut butter (allergens: subwith a different butter like sunflower butter). It starts with breakfast not ending with a situation on the field. Dont wait until you child is dehydrated before doing something. You dont want to give a child sodium tablets - its too much . Whereas drinks have already been measured out for you enough but because you child is not a college player, I suggest diluting at least half the Gatorade with water. Check with your pediatrician for the signs of whether it is sugar slump or an electrolyte issue especially if you child has more than one episode As a simple solution I put a 1/2 tsp of sea salt in 6 oz water and add 1 oz of orange juice but have a banana with to balance the sodium - potassium in the body. I suggest that depending on the activity. Say In 90 degree weather, direct sun, with heavy gear on with activity level constant: alternate in the first hour water then alternate every other drink with a Gatorade and water. Then after 90 min begin with one right after the other of after the electrolyte drink water. I have seen a marathon Runners skin shrink to just seeing skin and bones because of dehydration, he also complained of not being able to see. That was a wake up call for me. Stay hydrated but learn how to hydrate properly. even too much water is dangerous.
