I was looking at colleges, and when I stepped on SBCs campus. I knew I was home. Every fall when I returned, my heart felt lighter as soon as I caught the first glimpse of campus (Easier before the bypass). But I want to tell the story from my Senior Year. Senior year I was working on my thesis and my grandmother was dying. I spent most of that year with a bag half packed waiting for a call to come home. I wasnt sleeping because of home stress, and I had to be up and out in the field at dawn in January and February. One day early in spring semester, I was in my dorm room and I got a call from Dr. Davies (Biology department head at the time) asking me to come to her office. I had no classes with her at the time, I wasnt sure why she was calling. She had asked Dr. Fink about me and Dr. Fink wasnt happy with my work I was putting in on my thesis. I was there but not really trying. I was going through the motions. Davies was the one that realized I was depressed. I was shutting down. Those ladies caught me as I was in a downward spiral and prevented me from having a huge failure. They helped me realize my limits. We were able to rework my schedule. I dropped my thesis and switched projects for my senior research to something easier schedule wise. I was able to go home one weekend to SC to see my grandmother while she was still semi-lucid. My grandmother lived until 2 weeks after graduation. I got to show her my diploma. (Im the oldest of the grandkids, so the first graduate) This story would not have happened at a big school. It only happens at schools like SBC where the professors get to know you and they really see you. Im not sure what would have happened to me a different school, but I know Im thankful everyday for the professors that are passionate about teaching and care so much for their students. The whole student not just the grades. #Holla4thanks
