I was looking at some of the photos I took of the Saco River in Salmon Falls yesterday afternoon. Of course, "Life" always has a way of "showing" some of us what these places have been in the last centuries. As always, orbs arrived in one of these photos and revealed to me the history of the Saco River in Southwestern Maine. The spirits that revealed themselves to me were the Pequawket Tribe, a division of the Abenaki Indians. The Pequakets, whose name means "land of the hollows", lived at the headwaters of the Saco River, in the Fryeburg area, whose name also means "land of the hollows". I was very aware of the Pequawkets as we followed the Saco River yesterday. Their history and essence was there with me. I "saw them", there to catch many fish they would dry for the year, and also diving for crustations that were in this pure river. Celebrations were held here in the Spring, as many herbs and medical edibles were sprouting in the woods along the Saco. Eagles were very common here centuries ago, and were considered "Gods Representatives" to these Native Americans. I have also known several friends who lived near the Saco River, and they always "looked and felt" Native American to me, and were probably the Pequakets in their pasts, too. One of these friends actually lived on Pequaket Road in Steep Falls! I was completely at peace here yesterday, and look forward to returning soon.
