I was nominated by Minega Isibo to do my Top 10 books, I hereby nominate Peter Wanyonyi Shylock MbonyeAllan Brian SsenyongaMichael Otieno Onyangoand Allan Nash Bish 1. The World According to Garp – John Irving. The funniest book I ever read, basically Forest Gump but not a retard, an accidental hero who is there is every critical moment of history. 2. I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings – Maya Angelou. The first book that made me think I could be a writer, the vocal style I stole from her, where you hear her voice in every word. 3. Waiting – Goretti Kyomuhendo. In around 99 I stumbled on a beautiful book by a Ugandan lady about the paranoid times of Idi Amin, it also spurred me to want to be a writer. 4. Captain Corelli’s Mandolin – Louis Debernier. A perfect pure love story about wasted opportunities. Every line is poetry, every character is nuanced, perfection. 5. Beloved – Toni Morrison. A wonderful novel with so many layers of meaning, is it real is it not? Every time I read it I see a different angle, it poses deep moral questions. 6. Great Expectations – Charles Dickens. He creates a world with so much detail, mawkish characters, humanised caricatures of deep satirical wit that defined an era. I love Pip. 7. Invisible man – Ralph Ellison. Understanding that as a black man you have to play with “duality” being different to black and white people still rings true. 8. Collapse: Why Civilizations Choose To Fail – Jared Diamond. An academic text but really tells the story of humankind. It looks scientifically at how societies are affected by their choices. 9. Hitch-Hikers Guide To The Galaxy – Douglas Adams. An insane genius who created a world which chimes with all free-thinking people. Brilliant madness with quantum physics. 10. Zorba The Greek - Nikos Kazantsakis - oh Bouboudilla 11. The book I will write – Rama Isibo. A brilliant tale of Rwandan history told through a family over 120 years of epic history
