I was nominated by my girlfriend, Katie Van Buer, to do the ALS - TopicsExpress

I was nominated by my girlfriend, Katie Van Buer, to do the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. I am in India right now, though, so logistically it would be difficult for me to do the bucket video. The point of the campaign, however, is to raise awareness of ALS and support research for a cure - which I can do. Many people are trying to raise awareness about ALS, but dont really understand what it is. ALS (also known as Lou Gehrigs disease), is a degenerative disease of the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord that control voluntary muscle movement. It causes muscle weakness and atrophy throughout the body, which greatly worsens over time. Most people with ALS will eventually lose the all voluntary movement (including the ability to speak, eat, move, and even breathe) until their body can no longer support itself. There is no known cause of over 90% of ALS cases, where it is not genetic. There is currently no cure. ALS is a neglected disease. We need more research, and there may well be a cure that could impact the 500,000 people who are estimated to be affected by it right now globally, as well as the many thousands who are newly diagnosed each year. Please take advantage of the fact that ALS is currently at the front and center of our attentions on Facebook, and raise awareness for people living with this terrible disease. It doesnt happen often that we have such a perfect opportunity to influence public consciousness about such an important issue. In order to help create a world without ALS I decided to donate to ALSA: alsa.org/. In turn, I would like to nominate Erin Overstreet, Jess Friedman, and Tracy Overstreet to raise awareness in whatever way you see fit.
