I was nominated to participate in the ALS ice bucket challenge by my nursing school bud Edward OBrien a few days back. Although I am aware of the recognition and awareness this campaign has brought on, I was a little hesitant to participate (for a few reasons). Instead of dumping ice water on my head, I donated to thewaterproject.org/ This project invests in proven partners who are drilling fresh water wells, providing sanitation and hygiene training and constructing other sustainable water projects. The most amazing part is the organizers follow up, monitor and evaluate the projects I support to help ensure our shared work has a long-term impact. I then matched my donation to alsa.org/ I only hope that people who are participating in the challenge truly become aware by learning about this debilitating disease. Also, as another way to show my awareness, I will be writing my senior year Nursing school research paper on ALS. I am calling out everyone to post one thing you have learned about ALS. Show ME YOUR AWARENESS!
