I was off duty one Saturday afternoon driving my own personal vehicle in the summer of 1970. I crossed the Q bridge and noticed 2 vehicles parked against the guard rail going into Church Street South exit. 4 or 5 men were standing by the vehicles. Thinking it was an accident, I passed the 2 cars and pulled over with my flashers on to assist. Risking my own safety but knowing that Policeman are required to assist with any emergencies like accidents 24 hours a day. I displayed my badge and asked if I could assist. Nope, one said. Were just talking. I said gentleman, this is a dangerous place to stop, please get in your cars and leave. Same guy said, We aint moving, man. That badge means nothing so stick it up your a**. Cars getting off at the Church Street exit were whizzing by at a high rate of speed so for my own safety, I left the scene but got to a police call box on Frontage and York Street and first called the State Police and then called Headquarters. I had a good description of the vehicles and Mass. license plates. State Police arrived at the scene a few minutes later but reported that both vehicles were gone. I put out a broadcast with the description of both vehicles. I got a call at 10:00 PM from the West Haven PD that one vehicle was parked in front of the Penny Arcade at Savin Rock. I drove to West Haven and met with West Haven Police. The man sitting in the drivers seat was the one with the big mouth. The other men were not wanted. The West Haven Policeman put him in the back seat of his car. I tried to talk to him and maybe resolve it without an arrest, but he said, dont talk to me, just lock my ass up and take me to jail man. Thats what we did. He got his wish. Monday morning in court I was there. The Judge told him that, this Officer was doing his job for your own safety. The man said, F**k these cops man. That got him 30 days in Whalley Avenue County Jail..
