I was paddling on the Mohaka (gtade 2) with the Paddle Monkey and a complete Muppet paddles past us in a $20 warehouse toy boat. So this idiot is alone and has no PFD, Helmet and appears to be drunk. We were stopping and surfing and playing on eddie lines etc with the kids so he got in front of us and out of site, then about 1/2 an hour later we paddled around a corner where the river goes into the trees and around the corner is a plastic paddle. At this point I fear that he has drowned in the trees, but it no body can be found so we continue on our way. We get to the end to find Gonzos boat at the camp site. I find it incredible that dome people are this stupid, he got away with it this time through good luck but it is one of the reasons that so many people drown in New Zealand. In reflection it was good for my kids to see, as we paddle with full kit every trip which includes first aid, spare clothes, PLB (Spot), repair equipment, food, throw bags, spare paddle, pin kit & survival kit. We also all have the knowledge and experience to keep ourselves safe and I would like to say to this guy what you were doing was stupid as even in low flow that section of has the potential to drown you as I have had to rescue people from the trees in the past.
