I was playing Apples to Apples with two adorable little girls yesterday at work when I turned over a word card, which read, Lovely. The one laid down a picture of a guy with a puppy..the other laid down a picture of a girl (a white girl) with a guy on a camping trip. I asked them to plead their cases, when the one who laid down the picture of the white girl said that it was lovely because the girl in the picture was white unlike she herself was. The little girl is African American. Needless to say, my jaw dropped and I told her that that wasnt true at all, that she was lovely, that the color of our skin doesnt matter, that its whats underneath that matters, that our loveliness depends on how we treat others, and yadayadayada. But, she wouldnt buy it. Racism is NOT dead, people. This may not be a 50s segregated America, but when lovely little girls feel ugly just because they arent white? Something is still very much wrong with society. The minority is still feeling inferior. That girl is growing up thinking shes not good enough because of something that is completely beyond her control. Its been bothering me ever since. =\
