I was pleasantly surprised today when I visited the Anchorage Museum. I always visit city museums wherever I travel and many are poorly curated or equally poorly designed. The Anchorage Museum is wonderful in all ways. The building is new and very attractive. The exhibits are put together in a very intelligent and informative way. It was such a positive experience that I spent over 4 hours there and Im planing to go back tomorrow! On the first floor there were paintings of Mt McKinley all by local artists, all very talented. The more interesting exhibit began on the first floor and continued up to the second floor. It was a comprehensive documentary of the 1964 earthquake that devastated the area. 2014 is the 50th anniversary of the quake! Yesterday I took an earthquake walking tour and I was fascinating and I was hooked on the subject. The exhibit had photos with the actual seismic readouts as they related to each image. Interspersed throughout were videos with people who lived through it. The exhibit concluded with a live report on seismic activity happening at that moment. There are 50-100 earthquakes everyday in Anchorage!!! No this is not a misprint. Most of the quakes cannot be felt as they are small, but they are real! There is more to tell, but now Ill post some photos before I move on.
