I was pleased to know that a Downy Woodpecker (first pix) had been visiting our backyard periodically. Then I read about Hairy Woodpecker (second pix) when I got confused. Downy Woodpeckers are 7 inches in length, whereas, Hairy Woodpeckers are bigger at 10 inches. Differentiating one from the other can be difficult because their coloring is the same, but one is longer than the other. Comparing side by side is no problem. In our excitement we hung up Woodpecker food that Chickadees & Nuthatches peck at frequently every day. A Woodpecker came to it one day. Lo & behold, it looked more like a Yellow bellied Sapsucker (third pix on the right). Not being able to see the neck I couldnt tell if red was there. But the color on the head was much larger area than the Woodpeckers. Only time will tell. Either way, I was telling my cousin, Carol, that Abigail (female woodpeckers dont have red spots on their head) had been coming to visit. If a male came I had already given it the name of Mohinder Singh, an East Indian name that I like. I learned in Family Practice residency about that name from an East Indian nurse named Mohinder Kerr. An East Indian female with that name is single. Once she marries, her name becomes Mohinder Singh. Hence, she is no longer an eligible bachelorette. Thats how you know whether shes married or not. Now, an East Indian male has the name of Mohinder Singh. I can only imagine the confusion when Mohinder Kerr marries a man named Mohinder Singh, then theyre both Mohinder Singh. There must be something that differentiates one from the other when calling them by name when theyre together. I may have been told the difference by the nurse, Mohinder Kerr, but have since forgotten it. Either way, I found it very interesting. There is a similar English version. Carol is a females name. Carroll is a males name. Both are pronounced the same. Each would probably answer when you call out Carroll! Now what? So there. Carol, I meant Carroll.
