I was privileged enough to be spotted by the world renowned strength coach Charles Poliquin. I hit 140kg for 4 reps on my incline bench @ 90kg bw, my best is 155kg for a single. Upper body strength and power is obviously vital in contact sports, throwing sports and pressing events etc. It is also the key for optimal acceleration, in sports that involve sprinting, change of direction, starting from a dead stop etc. A good guide of structural balance for an athlete is to be able to incline press 75-80% of their front squat to take full advantage of their lower body strength. Obviously increasing both numbers will increase performance but to get the optimal balanced ratio aim for that difference.
