I was probably in the best shape of my life during 2013. I credit that to the way that we were training and the people who showed me how to train that way Xtreme Speed in Plainfield IL and the people who I trained with at Excel Training in St. Peters MO. Just about everything that we did was related to HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training). Although I had been running lot over the last two years and was doing anything from steady runs to HIIT while I ran, I barely ran for a 2 month period. During that time I probably ran 3 times for a distance of no more than 5 miles. I ran in a Spartan Race (Beast) in Texas which was about 13 miles. This was the furthest distance that I had ever run. I had absolutely no problem with the race until I blew my ankle out when I landed on a rock near the end of the race. Even though I concentrated on HIIT instead of running I came ready to run. HIIT is effective because when you increase your intensity to what ends up being an uncomfortable level and only rest long enough to partially recover, you deprive your body of oxygen. After you are done running your body will take a while to fully recover the oxygen that your body was deprived of. Your body also will release growth hormone.
