I was profoundly privileged and pleased to witness the graduation ceremony of my Southern Sudanese’s brethren in Nairobi, Kenya. The ceremony was well organized and well attended by both South Sudanese and friends of South Sudan. My prayers and best wishes shall always be with the graduates as they embark on jobs’ search and more. Oops, was in a closure session- the benediction which was uttered upon the graduates by his lordship, bishop of the episcopal church of South Sudan, was in part contrary. Especially when said, “The church and the Dinka traditions were NOT separate BUT intertwine…….. so, I wonder, where he got his theological training??…….. oooh, perhaps, he was excited or mesmerized in some extent as one of the graduates whom he happened to officiate her wedding to a catholic man with two additional wives, graduated. In his words, these couples were catholic and wanted to get married in catholic church but they were told, their wedding couldn’t be officiated because of the husband’s status. As a result, they consulted with his lordship and he immediately agreed and officiated their wedding. As he concluded the benedictions, he called to marry more folks with polygamous statuses citing, the Bible and the Dinka traditions similar. His testimony makes me to question, what exactly, is the church teaching to its followers?? Hey, “Give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s” (Matthew 22:22).
