I was prompted to write this as I sit here and watch Zain eat his Dominos pizza, looking up to the ceiling and closing his eyes as he grabs each pepperoni, then opens his eyes and puts it in his mouth...totally engulfed in every savory bite, and even more careful to structure his technique just so. This technique is one of several, as he eats his way through a pizza. These are behavioral tendencies/habits associated with OCD, Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD)...things that are associated with many genetic disorders...hence forth, his Hunter Syndrome. I once was told by a developmental doctor at UNC, after she only observed Zain in the waiting lobby for 5 minutes or less, to purchase the book called The Out Of Sync Child, and that I would read all about my son...and boy did I ever!! Also, when I came home tonight from getting his pizza, he was relentlessly beating on the breezeway wall with a spatula, and ultimately broke it, just as he broke one a couple nights ago from banging it on the kitchen counter. These kind of things have become our normal, and they are beautiful...even if they can create a lot of background noise (and to some, it sure isnt background noise, as Ive seen his spontaneous yells make people jump like they saw a ghost...lol), or notch up the wood of the furniture as he beats it relentlessly with a fork or whatever he has in his hand. Just as I had to remind his Dad as he got upset at the second broke spatula, the nature of his disease makes him have a need to bang, yell, hit, and just be aggressive in general at times...or look up to the ceiling and close his eyes as he grabs EVERY SINGLE pepperoni. Our coffee table has a rock top with a wood frame, and it has character from all the precious notches from being beat and banged on since the day we got it!! I choose to relish in the beauty of the differences...admire the scratches in the wood, hear the special ring and beauty in the yelling that has no particular reason. And spatulas are only a dollar to replace!!
