I was reading a post that talked about the increase in the violence in Chicago which has manifested itself in a huge number of homicide in the city. Last year ended in over 500 deaths. Today they are approaching 100 such deaths. But I have also been disturbed by the violent weekends in Milwaukee that have ended in several deaths and a number of shootings. I take special note of all of celebrations that are happening around the 1 year anniversary of the shooting that took place in the Sikh Temple in Oak Creek, no doubt a very tragic and horrific thing that has impacted all of us but in the many ceremonies I have not heard anyone make a serious connection between the lives lost in that Temple shooting and the violence that is almost a daily occurrence in the city of Milwaukee that continues to claim lives or cripple people for life. And here in lies the problem in my view that will keep us from addressing the reason for this violence in a clear way because we continue to allow our fragmentation as a community get in the way. It is that fragmentation that causes us to judge communities differently or the violence differently when in reality the loss in Milwaukee communities is just as deep as the loss felt by those families in Oak Creek and Sandy Hook. Grief in each one of these communities is deep and profound. There could be real solutions if legislators are faced with the wrath and the numbers of all of those who have been touched by senseless and hateful violence.
