I was reading a profile of a General Electric leader, Fanyana Maseko on Business Day. He is now a Senior Compliance Officer at GE. Born and raised in Tjakastad, Mpumalanga, Maseko refused to be discouraged by the difficulties of coming from a humble environment. Rather, he was inspired to succeed by working hard to overcome his circumstances. After completing matric at Mkolishi High School, he was forced to to take on part time employment and piece work wherever he could find it, in order to save money to further his studies. In this way he managed to complete his N4 through a Technical College. In 2001, he applied for a job as a messenger at Stannic and got the post. And in his 10 years at the bank, he moved through the ranks from Messenger to Mail Clerk, Document Management Clerk, Team Leader of Document Management, Operational Risk Officer, Compliance Risk Officer, and Business Risk Officer. During his time he also attained an impressive list of qualifications, including a BCom (Risk Management) from Unisa, Certified Associate of the Institute of Bankers, Advanced Diploma in Treasury, Certificate in Corporate and Ethics Governance from University of Pretoria. Maseko, a man driven by ongoing learning, is currently studying for his BCom Honors at Unisa. There are many stories like this amongst our people. Stories that should be told, stories that can birth a dream in an upcoming youngstar from these humble environments. Let this story remind us that it matters not how we start but how we finish.
