I was reading an article in Slate the other day about unclaimed funds. As a point of law, corporations are not allowed to keep money they owe people. If they cant find those people, they have to hand to money over the State Comptroller, who holds it until its claimed. Every state has an office of unclaimed funds, and according to the article there is over $62 BILLION sitting in these various state accounts. Although each state has an independent office you can contact, the web site below does a search on all of them at once. Out of curiosity I did a search on my name - and Im owed money! I dont know exactly how much; according to the info its more than $100 but less than $1000. And its from some form of insurance or stock going back decades. Wow. It looks like the State of Ohio is going to make me jump through some hoops to get the money, in the form of paperwork and proof that Im me, etc. But its found money I didnt even know was mine, so Im calling this a win. Im curious to hear if anyone else besides me has money sitting in one of these accounts. Try it out and let me know.
