I was reading recently that one of the traditions of a papal installation (from the 1400s-1963) was that a cardinal would hold a bundle of flax on a reed and approach the new Holy Father. He would light the bundle of flax, which would immediately ignite into a burst of flame and smoke and then dissipate as quickly as it came. With it, the cardinal would speak the words, Sic transit Gloria mundi. (Thus passes the glory of the world). Indeed, thus passes the glory of the world - a burst of flame and smoke, and then...dust and ash. Gods word alone endures. #40daysofinspiration
