I was recently asked What is it about a job in Wildland Fire that gets you so excited? I needed a minute to organize my reasons. I dont enjoy flying. I hate camping and yet those are some of the very reasons I love Wildland lol. Let me explain. The adrenaline starts from the moment that phone rings with an assignment. Youve got two hours to check your gear, wrap up what you were in the middle of and report in. For me right away I start summoning courage. Donna, youre fixing to get on a plane! Gear check has me look at a tent. Oh gawd, an extended camping trip. This brings to the surface the realization of something I prefer to avoid but must endure. I arrive at BLM get my issue and meet up with team members. I love meeting new faces and seeing familiar faces. I overcome fear and get on a plane. Instant feeling of success. The beauty I see along the way from up above leaves me feeling a part of something bigger than the lifestyle Ive left behind. We arrive meet MORE new and familiar faces and set up camp. At the end of a long hot 16 hour day my tent is a welcomed sight. Taking off my boots. Washing the days grime off with bath in a bag. Pulling my sleeping bag over my exhausted body. I realize how grateful I am for my temporary shelter. And this is just day 1 of a 14 day assignment! Go figure. If I am passionate about aspects Im not fond of, imagine the enthusiasm I feel towards what I consider POSITIVE! I cant wait for that phone call.
