I was remembering earlier - the Australia of the White Australia Policy - the Australia I spent my childhood in - and the great sigh we all breathed when Whitlam and Fraser started us on the road to a tolerant multicultural caring society, and Ive watched with horror as successive governments have begun to dismantle that legacy and return us to a place only a libertarian American would recognise. The problem here is that no-one remembers those days - theyre not taught it - they take the Australia our generation and our fathers created and springboard off it to a nastier - meaner - totally self-centred and xenophobic place that Im ashamed of. Ive never been a patriot - because that kind of nationalistic view lets you sweep too many problems under the rug - and blinkers you to the achievements of others. But Whitlam and Frasers legacy was something I was extremely proud of - and for these horrible little reactionary blinkered nobodies to trash it - starting with Hawke and Keating - accelerated under Howard - the brakes applied mildly under Rudd and Gillard - and now full-throttle into an abysmal future... wow... and a Gen Xer had the cheek to blame MY generation for it the other day....
