I was reminded last night that DAPNet is not just about having good working relationships with our animals, or advancing our culture with new equipment or new methods with old equipment. It is more than getting a mower to work properly, or how to remove wood from a forest. Sometimes here on facebook we get distracted by calender photos and fancy vehicles, and forget about our animals being a tool that improves the sustainability of our land based enterprises. Often they are more than a tool, they are a link to completing nutrient cycles and liberate us from some amount of fuel consumption. They can help to decrease our off the farm/forest inputs, increase our soil health and aid us in becoming better stewards of our surroundings. Many of us are planning this time of year towards better stewardship and more sustainable enterprises (farms, homesteads, forests, etc). It would be great to share some of our goals and plans, sustainability means something different to each of us and that is good, but how will draft animals help get you closer?
