I was reminded of a fascinating story by some events today. This was told me by Richard Muow, and its about Jim Wallis. The pre-cursor to Sojourners was a magazine called the Post American and it caused quite a stir at Trinity seminary when it first came out. The faculty were to hold a meeting and one of the topics was what to do about Jim and the magazine. Well, one well-known faculty member was on the way to the meeting when he stopped to get gas for his car. The attendant noticed a copy of the Post American on the professors dash. When he commented about it, the professor asked him what he thought. The attendant shrugged and said, Oh, well, seems to me its written by folks who think being a faithful Christian is more important than being an American. That simple comment changed the way the professor saw the whole issue and he not only changed his intended vote, but was a major voice in getting the faculty to resist the temptation to censure Jim. Where does our primary allegiance lie...thats always been a critically important issue, even to the point early Christians would die rather than swear allegiance to Caesar.
