I was saddened to hear of the demise of my distant uncle, renowned Bengali writer Nabarun Bhattacharya. Im not going to pretend to be an expert on his work or a very close relative. And I came back to India at an age too late to get my Bengali up to a mark respectable enough to escape its fate as the laughing stock of the family. I would, nevertheless like to share one small memory that has never left me. One I encountered at one of those huge family gatherings (where I wasnt even sure how everyone was related to me or vice versa). N.B. : So you want to be a musician I hear? Me: (all of 15 and raring to go) Yessir! N.B. : Whatre you doing about about it? Me: Well sir Ive been taking piano lessons for a while now and I think Im getting a band together. I think Ill move soon to study music... N.B. : Pfff.... He interrupted me. Piano lessons, Study, Ok. A band huh? Get two trucks together. Me: What? N.B. You say you have a band? Get two trucks together. And get them back-to-back in the middle of the street. You want to be a musician? All you need is a stage. Then play. I thought he was being rather mad. And today after all those piano lessons and music-degrees and stuff, I hope ill have the balls to get those two trucks together someday. My deepest respects and condolences to the family. My apologies if this post was inappropriate in any way.
