I was searching through some old post and this one caught my eye, wish I had posted it before Christmas, but it seems that I was foreseeing my future back in Nov. 2012. Things I remember: I may be turning into a TREE HUGGER! The other day I was thinking about Christmas trees. I remember when I was a small boy my grandfather and I would always go to the woods and cut our own wild Christmas tree. We mostly went to Nine Mile in Seville, there used to be an abundance of trees there. We would walk through the woods looking for that perfect tree and when we found it Pops would take his trusty ax and chop it down. of course no trip to the woods ever went by that we didnt cut a couple of swamp cabbage to take home, you remember those from a previous post? Some good eating. Sure wish I had a mess of them on the stove now. You never seem to realize how much you like something until you dont have it anymore. Back to the story. I remember several of our tree cutting trips had more meaning than others, there was always the lesson I learned about safety in the woods and making sure I didnt chop my foot off with the ax. And Pops always let me go around the cabbage and cut the fronds off but it was years before he would trust me to cut the cabbage down so that I would not cut above the bud. the best part of the cabbage. Isnt it funny things that as a kid we thought was fun and couldnt wait to get a chance to grab that ax and spend 20 mins of back breaking work to cut down that cabbage tree and once we grow up we are like, yeah I want it but that sure is a lot of hard work.. Back to Christmas trees. As I said the other day I was thinking about Christmas trees as the season is upon us. and I started thinking about all of those poor trees that lost their lifes so I could throw some lights on them for a couple of weeks and I was like WOW I need to buy a live tree and let it grow, that is when I realized that I might just be becoming a TREE HUGGER. whats next becoming a VEGETARIAN. It is possible but dont see it in the near future. The days of me going out into the woods to find and cut a tree are over for sure. I do love the smell of a fresh cut cedar tree but there are few places you can go now days without getting shot for trespassing Yes, there is always the handy tree stands by the road that bring in trees a month and a half before you need one, all of the needles fall off the night before Christmas and I wake up to a toothpick on a stand. tried it didnt like it,and of course there is always that beautiful tree in my neighbors yard, not sure how that would go over. If I buy a cut tree I still go to a tree farm and get them to cut it for me, of course they dont do it the old fashioned way with an ax they use a chain saw and make a lot of loud noise, kind of takes that special feeling out of it but the tree always last through the holiday season without losing all of its needles. Still possible I will buy a live tree and watch it grow. After reading this, I realize that I still have not bought my live tree and Charlene has done her best to introduce me to the life style of a Veggie consumer. I actually look forward to eating a salad or some raw carrots these days.. Not to get alarmed, I am still a Butt Rubber at heart and soon will be firing up the smoker and posting more pictures of my Butt for all to see..and as always you are welcome to come over and Bite My Butt. So on to the new year and who knows, I may even have a veggie burger for lunch.
