I was speaking to a lady today who asked a very valid question. She wanted to know why Better Together say we are subsidised while YES say we subsidise the UK. Im sure many other people have been confused by this. Let me explain in easy terms. We currently live in the UK which is made up of Scotland, England, Wales and Ireland who each raise taxes. However, there is a 5th tax raising area, which is the North Sea (few people realise this). The north sea revenues are classed as extra-regio, meaning Scotland actually has 2 separate tax raising regions. So, if you only take Scotland on its own without the north sea oil revenues, then we pay in less than we get back. If however, you take into account and include the taxes raised within our maritime area through oil production, then we pay in more than we get back. And in 2011-2012, that over-payment amounted to £4.4 BILLION, yes BILLION! The reason this was done was to make Scotland and the Scottish people look poorer than our neighbours. So in fact we are actually a net contributor to the UK. So..... Better Together say we contribute less than we receive because they do not include the North Sea oil revenues. YES say we contribute more than we receive because they include all taxes raised within Scottish borders, both land and maritime. There are only a few days to go. Wake up and smell the coffee Scotland. We have been getting fleeced for decades whilst our public services suffer, poverty grows and we fund the Westminster elite. Lets make Scottish money work for Scotland and its people. Now is the time. Now is our time. Vote YES. Mike Strachan
